The new & current Pop movement is alive and accessible because of the faithful and courageous galleries and curators that give them home! Yes, there is Juxtapoz , but, a magazine can only do so much. This list is definitely not definitive, but hopefully gives a good overview of the Lowbrow art denomination (plus, each site has tons of artwork and artists’ links!)

ArtTube: High and Lowbrow Art on YouTube

ArtTube: High and Lowbrow Art on YouTube

 soto

Gotta love Internet 2.0!

OK, as a crazed art fanboy, I have been finding some great art jems on Youtube.com! ……however, in finding the stuff I like (gallery work, artist interviews, lowbrow), I have to search and sift through tons of animation (not a big hobby of mine), art how-tos, pin striping, and assorted Bob Ross-ish crafty amateur art (I do enjoy some performance art…. but, I haven’t ventured there yet). First, I have saved all my favs into a YouTube group @ http://www.youtube.com/group/popcalypse (so far, about 45). I will be posting videos often from that group!

Since we have been on a Lowbrow 101 kick….here are two videos on the history of Lowbrow and the founder: Robert Williams….

Here are some great vids of one of my fav artists: Jeff Soto……

(Video refers to painting at top)

Lowbrow 2.0 Virtue of Diversity

Lori EarleyNeckface

Lowbrow 2.0 Virtue of Diversity

One of the troubles of the current Lowbrow movement is hanging a label on it. Well, it turns out to be one of its greatest virtues.  The new Lowbrow has also been called Pop Surrealism; a newcomer could be easily confused on the fusion of two monumental art movement terms, especially when trying to understand the graffiti/street Lowbrow.  Any pairing of art movement terms could grasp a tentacle of the Lowbrow squid…..such as Abstract Dada, Romantic Futurism, or Humanistic Realism.  Despite the art label wrangling, Lowbrow 2.0’s current army is enlisted with multifarious styled forces.

Lowbrow 2.0 Art : 101

Lowbrow 2.0 Art : 101
Robert Williams

What is Lowbrow? Well, simply, its an art movement dating back to the ‘70s that encompasses ‘lowbrow’ concepts such as drugs, sex/porn, violence, irreverence, delinquency  and  how they interacted within a west coast/ SoCal  party culture.  The ‘father’ of Lowbrow is artist Robert Williams; his style can be categorized as the quintessential Lowbrow style. The new generation of Lowbrow artists tend to reject the ‘lowbrow’ label, yet they all acknowledge that they are all offsprings of that movement.  The ‘Lowbrow’ label still tends to attach itself to the newer or second generation of artists by inheritance.

Some of the other labels that are used with the current art movement include: Pop Surrealism, Newbrow, Nobrow, Neo-Pop, and Underground.  An easy way to get introduced to Lowbrow, is to pick up a copy of Juxtapoz magazine.

Here is a brief set of links to get you introduced to the history and understanding of Lowbrow:

POPcalypse NOW!

Jeff Soto  Camille Rose Garcia  Jeremey FishMark Ryden

Welcome to the end of ‘Lowbrow / counterculture’ and to the beginning of the POPcalypse! This site is dedicated to the new pop art movement. Whether you call it ‘Pop surrealism’,  ‘Lowbrow’ or underground, one thing is certain, this movement has moved above ground and into the culture itself, and wedging itself into current art history as a vital and viral art culture.  Ok, I love Pop Art!  Fresh into college I got hooked on Jasper Johns, Rauschenberg, & Warhol.  I then learned that I loved all of the art-offsprings including the Hairy Who, Scharf, Kienholz, ect.  While in art school I remember picking up the first issue of Juxtapoz and seeing Robert Williams on the cover (I was pissed too, there wasn’t even one article about him in it….besides the ads!). Anyway, its been great watching the evolution of an art scene (from the outside).  This new pop art has matured into a new beast- the beast of the POPcalypse! Stay tuned as we daily explore the success and superstars of this movement, how many have risen out of the ‘lowbrow’ and into art history.  Why ‘POPcalypse”? I believe this art movement is the ultimate culmination of the current and past pop philosophies.  Post Modernism is the current religion; this art revolution is the ‘antichrist’.  It is the end of art as we know it; the definitions are once again being rewritten. Sounds dramatic? Well, exactly! Come along for the ride as we explore these new definitions and whatever crazy creature crawls our path!
