st. Mars art 101

Mars’ art history 101

Variety: Never making up my artistic directional mind(thanks ADD!): ….fine art(BFA…large scale painting & printmaking)…..

….then an airbrushing biz, then web design….

…then a failed attempt at comic-styled art….

…then digital illustration….

& now, circling back to fine art….

…a new cycle of Mars is coming!

Brian Ewing

http://www.BRIANEWING.com

1. Brian Ewing

3. San Francisco, CA (for now)

4. 1/12/74

5. Single

6. zilch

7. Illustrator, designer and gig poster artiste’

8. Pencil and ink. I draw and ink everything by hand and then rock the rest on the computer. Most of my gig posters and art prints are SCREENPRINTED. Like Emek but not as “fancy pants”.

9. http://www.BRIANEWING.com
http://ewingbrian.livejournal.com/
http://www.revengethroughbetterliving.com

10. Working in the music industry is part of my job so I listen to way too much music. Uhh… Nick Cave, Ramones, Coheed and Cambria, Brand New, Stiff Little Fingers, Generation X, Buzzcocks, X, The EX, Turbonegro, Iron Maiden, Taking Back Sunday, The Michelle Gun Elephant, The Damned, Screamin’ Lord Sutch, Interpol, Mastadon, High On Fire, Atmosphere, N.E.R.D., Gym Class Heroes, Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss, Slo Burn, Radio Birdman, Tom Waits, and anything that has to do with Billy Childish. I suck at answering this question. It’s my job, so I listen and like a variety of music. Blessing and a curse.

11. Oy vey…Hmmm… Dave Johnson, Moebius, The Hanuka Bros., Hernandez Bros., Adam Hughes, Ryan Sook, Tara McPherson, Bradstreet, The Drink and Draw Social Club, Serpieri, Dave Crosland, Ash Wood, Mahfood, Mignola, The EC guys, Paul Pope, The Studio, Becky Cloonan and Wrightson. There are a ton more but nobody gets past the first few names.

12. Pushead, Emek, Andrew Bawidamann, Methane Studios, Invisible Creatures, Ragnar, Terada, Nirasawa, Takeya, Moser, Mucha, Klimt, Hohlwein, House Industries, Burlesque, Jay Ryan, Phil Hale, Dan St. George, Stephen Somers, Frazetta, Range Murata, Kozik, Coop, Forbes, Hampton….make it STOP!

13. My friends. They keep me honest. They also inspire me. We’re always recommending stuff to one another. Music and movies are a big inspiration to me. So is a stroll through an art museum or looking at porn. What, like I’m the only person that does that?

14. http://www.rocketsociety.com
http://www.gigposters.com

15. Cartoons: Ghost In The Shell (1&2), FLCL, Jin-Roh, Appleseed, Family Guy, Samurai Jack, Venture Bros., and the Simpsons.
Comic Books: Hellboy, 100 Bullets, Black Hole, Pirates of Coney Island, East Coast Rising and the old EC Comics.

16. Useless dust collecting crap. Like: Frankenstein, Pushead, Hellboy and Kid Robot Stuff. I also started collecting original art. I’m a book junkie too. Moving sucks for me.

POPspace: Pop Art on Myspace

POPspace: Pop Art on Myspace

I confess, I resisted Myspace as long as I could, but I gave in a year or so ago; I am glad I did!  Myspace has become a great ‘starter’ site for a lot of artists & is utilized for marketing for most of the Lowbrow 2.0 crowd.  I myself only use it for art surfing and news posting, but other than that, I find Myspace ugly and the ‘social networking’ aspect defunct.  Before we get to the art, I am plugging VIRB @ http://virb.com !  VIRB’s design is slick, and I actually socially network….I’ve met some great people on there: visit st. Mars @ http://virb.com/mfnd !

OK, here are a handful of some of the great Popcalyptic artists of Myspace:

 James Roper

JUXTAPOZ #1 Flashback

JUXTAPOZ #1 Flashback

I regards to Lowbrow 101, I found my old copy of Juxtapoz #1: winter 1994.  I remember when I first picked this issue up….I was so excited! I couldn’t believe that a Robert Williams art mag had made it all the way to East Texas!  I was in art school at the time & was familiar with Robert Williams work through the local bookstore; I was always diggin’ around, lookin’ at all the Frazetta, Dali, and Warhol books. It was a weekly ritual to scan through all the art & design mags ( …I only do this once every month or two now; thank God & my wife for my subscriptions to Jux, Art in America, and Art Forum!).

…Anyway, here are some scans of the first issue! The mag did a good job at being thorough when it cam to variety (a trademark of Lowbrow). The issue included digital art, photography, pin striping, comics, fantasy, and a John Pound centerfold poster! Check out the editorial at the front…it ends with, “…the art magazine that plans to stay below everyone’s dignity”. We will revue the current Jux issue this weekend (..still reading it…great issue: I love Panter, Morning Breath, & Faile = who needs their own cover story!!!! http://www.faile.net &   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faile_(artist_collective) ).

OK…

cover.jpgpg1.jpgpg12.jpgpg18.jpgpg22.jpgpg23.jpgpg24.jpgpg25.jpgpg37.jpgposter.jpgpg66.jpgpg77.jpgpg80.jpgback.jpg

One of the artists displayed in the mag above is Manuel Ocampo: http://artscenecal.com/ArticlesFile/Archive/Articles1997/Articles1097/MOcampoA.html

Rock on!
